Vol. 5, No. 1

Winter 2011-12

This has been a busy and somewhat challenging year. With a little bit of luck, I will get this one newsletter out just in time to wish you merriment in celebrating the arrival of 2012 and health, happiness, and prosperity throughout the year. It's an opportunity for me to share with some of our happenings including our move. Our new address in San Luis Obispo is posted above.

My associates and I partner with entrepreneurs and others to promote business, offer tutoring and other educational services, conduct research, sell things, generate and track client email newsletters, and weave and host webs. Below are a few examples of this year's web weaving and/or client activities followed by some advice on cell phones.

Family Service Association (FSA), Ethiopia, registered as an Ethiopian Resident Charity, maintains and/or increases the intimate relationship of the family, the nucleus of the community and society. Moreover, it aims to alleviate the socio-economic problems facing women, youth, children, and other disadvantaged segments of society in response to increasing incidents of violence against women (VAW) and children.

The website, in English and in Dutch, gives information about the services and the accomplishments of the organization and is set up to receive donations via PayPal. FSA staff may post their own news without intervention from Guli.

Baptism garments made in Bethlehem by Palestinian Christians come in infant sizes ranging from newborns to 24 months, but special orders can be accommodated. On the left you see Sara in Jordan at six months. On your right you see Thomas in Oregon who, at age seven, chose his own garment which was made especially for his size. In the style of tunic prevalent in Biblical times and even today in the Holy Land, these garments feature embroidery patterned after a mosaic in the Church of the Nativity. Your order connects you to the birthplace of Jesus and helps support Holy Land Christians.

Brotherhood Way in San Francisco is a neighborhood of residences, faith communities, schools, and organizations that respect diverse traditions and promote cooperation. Near San Francisco State University, students live in the Parkmerced complex next to young families, and active seniors. Alma Via offers assisted living. Various ethnic groups are represented along Brotherhood Way. It is fitting that the green area is also home to the Bufano Peace Statue.

Elder Exercise dot US is a service offered by Wanda Fetyko of San Luis Obispo to local seniors who need gentle coaching to keep  physically active and in shape. One feature of Wanda's program is laughter yoga.

No doubt you have noticed that Wanda's domain is not a dot com but a dot US. When the website was registered, dot com was not available. Recently it has become available...for a high price. She's sticking with dot US.

The pastor, staff, and people of St. Brendan Parish in San Francisco want to make sure that all parishioners have the information they need to participate fully and actively in the life of their church. Besides general information, the bulletin, other news, and pastor's messages are posted regularly. Newcomers may register online or download the parish registration form to submit by mail or in person.

The website for St. Benedict's Parish for the Deaf at St. Francis Xavier Church in San Francisco is especially useful to the non-hearing. In addition to the typical things you would find on a church website are the links to various forms and materials that can be downloaded and read at leisure. Parishioners will also find their religious life and fellowship activities well documented in their picture album that shows a vibrant community whose members don't necessarily live in the same neighborhood.

A television crew recently interviewed Chef Jose Dahan of ET VOILA Restaurant in San Luis Obispo

regarding a new law in California that will ban foie gras. I actually acquired a taste for this rare delicacy when I lived in France in the 1970s and, in fact, I taught English in Strasbourg to a representative who was preparing to promote foie gras in the USA. No matter what your tastes are or whether or not you agree with the ban out of your concern for animal rights or for other reasons, you may want to hear Chef Jose's comments, especially about going with him to his native Toulouse for a feast of foie gras when it can no longer be served in his restaurant here: http://www.ksby.com/player/?video_id=15687

  Comments from Claudia...on cell phones

No doubt you have received email messages with sensational stories or alarming messages about cell phones. Most of these are bogus. Cell phones do not cause corn kernels [or your brain cells] to pop or sparks to be ignited at gas stations. You cannot use a cell phone to unlock a keyless entry car, and calling #77 will not connect you with the Highway Patrol. And you do not need to register your cell phone number with the DO NOT CALL list to avoid calls from telemarketers. But here is an anecdote that, though it may or may not be true, is plausible.

A woman's handbag with her cell phone, keys, credit cards, and wallet inside was stolen. Using the number in her address book that was labeled HOME, the thief sent a text message to her husband asking him to remind her of the PIN on their bank account so that she could get some cash for shopping. He texted the number back. And, as the story has it, the thief had everything he needed to wipe out the couple's bank account.

One might think it's just plain common sense not to reply to a text message asking for a PIN number or a password just as it's plain common sense not to give your Social Security number to an unknown person calling you on the phone. But sometimes people are caught off guard and, as in the this case, they respond to what they think is ordinary, legitimate communication. The point is that you must have a strict policy of never giving out critical information without doing some checking.

The other piece of advice coming from this story is that your contact list should not indicate relationships. The names in your cell phone address book should not say HUBBY, HONEY, MOM, SON, GRANDPARENTS, or even HOME. A thief can do considerable damage just by calling the folks in your address book, or, if more industrious, he or she can use the numbers to find the identity and address of each person listed. The less a thief knows about you and your relationships, the better.

Be wise and be safe!
