| Passionate about making sure kids have the opportunity not only to develop their athletic abilities but also to gain visibility, Rick Whitlock and Thaddeus Friday created Hidden Gems Sports Exposure. On May 10th they will host the first annual Central Coast combine during which young athletes will go through a series of drills and check rankings with other participants. Videotapes available to coaches and scouts may help some students win an athletic scholarship. For the moment the combines are being held here on the Central Coast, but the two sports minded dads are open to hosting events in other regions since, as they put it, "hidden gems are everywhere." The story of how these two men and their families got involved in helping students whose athletic talent might otherwise go unnoticed is on their website: www.HiddenGemsSportsExposure.com | ||||||

Ethiopian children with disabilities stay at Alemachen before and after surgery |
|||||
| ooo | ||||||
| Throughout Ethiopia boys and girls, ages 5-12, with disabilities are referred by physicians and surgeons for treatment in Addis Abeba. The youngsters have a place to stay and thrive free of charge at Alemachen, a children's home operated by the Vincentian fathers. The home is totally dependent on contributions from caring people. Five dollars (four Euros) is enough to cover the expenses of one child for one day. | ||||||
|
Last fall, when Dutchman Piet Jongepier
visited his daughter who has lived in Addis Abeba for the past two
years, he took dozens of photos of the children. You can view their
portraits among many other pictures on the Alemachen website:

We're entering our sixth year of selling autographed and collectible science fiction, fantasy, and mystery books over the internet. Since we started the business in 2002, we have shipped over 4,500 books to all 50 US states and more than 25 countries around the world. |
|||||||||
| ooo | ||||||||||
| While there are many interesting stories to tell, we think the winner is the one about the journey a shipment made before arriving at its destination in Switzerland. Normally shipments take a direct route and arrive on schedule. This one, however, went from San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles to Memphis to Paris to South Africa to London to South Africa again to Paris again and, finally, to Switzerland. Able to follow the path daily by checking online, we were baffled as to why a package bound for the Alps would make two stops in South Africa. Shipping charges were refunded for non-performance, and we, in turn, reimbursed the customer who, like us, was relieved when the precious books landed in his library. | ||||||||||

| Check our listings for books autographed by your favorite science fiction, fantasy, or mystery author as well as signed books by some of the Mercury and Apollo astronauts. | ||||||||||

| Last November Monsignor Labib Kobti, pastor of St. Thomas More Church of San Francisco, visited the Philippine Islands for the wedding of two parishioners who wanted to get married among family and friends in their homeland. Absolutely delighted with his visit to these gorgeous islands, he was moved to feature appreciation pages on the church website. |
|
|||||||||

| "I was overwhelmed by the generosity of my hosts and the natural beauty of the islands," exclaims Monsignor Labib who prefers to be called Abouna [Father in Arabic] Labib. "I now understand better why the Filipinos I encounter at St. Thomas More Church are so talented. Their native environment engenders artistic and musical development." | ||||||||||

| The pictures he took can be viewed online. After you visit the photo album, you may want to plan your next vacation in the Philippines. | ||||||||||
