Linsil Travel

After retiring from the military, Linda and Fil Silverio established Linsil Travel  in 1996 as a result of their love of travel, of education, and of other cultures. They have arranged travel for families, honeymoon couples, students, and groups worldwide. Destination specialties include countries in Europe, Middle East, Mexico, Central America, and Asia, and their religious tours have included sites in Europe, Mexico, the Middle East, and United States. Linsil offers not just a trip but a total experience of the country, its culture, and its history. Linda and Fil invite all to be ambassadors
of peace and love.

As St. Augustine once said, “The World is a book, and those who do not travel, read only a page….”

Brotherhood Way Festival

ooo
San Francisco is the home of the only street in the United States that bears the name "Brotherhood Way." It is located in the neighborhood where we lived until 2005. In the churches, synagogue, and schools along Brotherhood Way, many languages are spoken by people of various ethnic groups. While we used to look forward to the annual events put on at various times by, for example, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church or Calvary Armenian Church, Ron mused that they would do well to get together and celebrate with an international cookout. And that is what happened at the first annual Brotherhood Way Festival held on May 4, 2008. Middle Eastern and Filipino barbeque, Mediterranean breads and pastries, as well as almond cookies baked by the Verbum Dei Sisters, were among the culinary treats. Songs and dances, face painting and bouncing, exhibits and costumes all contributed to making the day special.

Our Lady of Hope Spirituality Center, Benin, West Africa

ooo

If you really wish to make a retreat away from telephones, email, and faxes, Our Lady of Hope Spirituality Center might be a good choice. Located in Benin, West Africa, OLOH offers group and individual retreats. It is also a center for the formation of spiritual directors.

One special purpose of OLOH is to serve as a place for exploring and understanding African spirituality and developing interreligious dialogue.

Connecting in the Holy Land

ooo

The Holy Land Institute launched its pilot pilgrimage in March of this year. In addition to seeing ancient ruins and Biblical sites, we met with the local people and heard first hand their stories and dreams. Standing at the place where, according to tradition, Moses gazed across the Jordan River to the Promised Land is, well, an awesome experience, and so is sipping cardamom coffee with gracious hosts.

Petra, where the Nabateans reigned for some 400 years, is on among the "new" Seven Wonders of the World. Located on the spice route, it is the place we imagine when we think of the Magi picking up frankincense. We enjoyed a jeep trip on Wadi Rum where we met up with some soaking wet hikers from England who, in traversing a cave, found a pool of water in the path.

ooo

More pilgrimages are in the works for the fall and winter. We will visit Moab and Ammon, Nazareth and Galilee, Bethlehem and Jerusalem, Qumran and the Dead Sea...and more. By frequenting guesthouses -- where everyone has a private room with a bath -- we are helping support the local people, their families, and their special projects and ministries including education and services to people with disabilities.

ooo

One important feature of the Holy Land Institute pilgrimages is that the size of the group is limited.

Considering buying a house in San Luis Obispo?

ooo
I wish that we had bought a house or condo in San Luis Obispo when Christian was a student at Cal Poly. It would have been a very good investment as well as housing for him and his roommates. My preference would have been for a walk-to-downtown location. A student could walk or bike to campus, Cal Poly or Cuesta, or take the bus...for free.

Prices are higher today, but SLO is still a good place for purchasing a house as a residence or as an investment.

Saint Philip the Apostle School

ooo

In the heart of San Francisco's Noe Valley, St. Philip the Apostle School was founded in 1938. The parish school continues its longstanding tradition of challenging youngsters academically while nurturing the soul. Representing diverse ethnic groups, the children do reading, writing, and arithmetic as well as Spanish, science, technology, and sports. What impresses me is that the parents take an active role in the school life of their offspring. If you happen to be in San Francisco the last weekend of September, you may wish to take the kids or grandkids to the annual school festival--bounce house, face painting, good food, and lots of fun.

At the present time we have two designs from the Jinshan Peasant Art Academy for our t-shirts which come in two different styles--regular t-shirts and fashion t-shirts. We have obtained the rights to other designs for the future.

Our t-shirts are available for sale online, and 20 percent of each sale goes to the Ricci Institute for Chinese Western Cultural History at the University of San Francisco.

Alone and on foot from the Netherlands to Jerusalem

On June 15 Jan Ermers--my colleague, neighbor, and friend at Sichuan International Studies University in Chongqing--set out on foot from his hometown of Nijmengen in the Netherlands for Jerusalem. Remembering the massacres of various peoples during the Crusades, he intends to pick up a stone at Dachau to take to the Wailing Wall and a stone at Srebrenica to take to the Al Asqa mosque and a stone in Eastern Turkey to take to the Church of the Holy Saviour.

Developing Fun and Creativity in Science Education

That is the business of Science Discovery. Specializing in education programs for water conservation, recycling, and waste management, they build exhibits and design, develop, and deliver curricula to schools and communities. Pictured on the right is a 3D, six-foot long worm with anatomical features for a presentation on vermicomposting for people of all ages.

Weeks on the Mexican Riviera

Details at www.guligroup.com/vacation

Ron and I loved the many weeks we spent in Puerto Vallarta, and we also enjoyed trading weeks for time at resorts in New England, the Deep South, Cancun, Acapulco, Hawaii, Spain, and Scotland among other places. But now we have less time for vacationing than we did when we were both working full time. And so...we have three weeks for sale. You make a one time payment for a week to enjoy for many years to come [until 2017 in one case and 2023 in the other two]. Each year you pay a "maintenance fee" which covers much more than keeping the gardens beautiful and refurbishing the apartments as there are daily maid service and 24/7 security during your stay. Timeshares are great...if you take vacations. Contrary to the spiels at timeshare presentations, they are not equity investments, and they will not pay college tuition for your son or daughter. But they do make it possible for you and your family to relax and have fun at an affordable price in a luxurious setting.
